"JUMPSTART YOUR WRITING"--A NEW SEMINAR FOR ASPIRING WRITERS
Although many people express interest in writing a novel, memoir, or other
book, most never make it past the idea stage. Roberta Isleib, clinical
psychologist and author of the Cassie Burdette mystery series and many
nonfiction articles, will be teaching a class on September 28 at RJ Julia
Booksellers in Madison, CT, focusing on getting ideas off the blocks and
onto the page. The seminar will help ³stuck² writers explore the issues that
may be blocking their progress, and provide tips and exercises for how to
get them going.
"Call it what you like--writer's block, procrastination, or even fear,"
Isleib said, "many aspiring writers simply aren't successful at translating
their ideas into print. If you have the urge to write, but you¹re having
trouble launching your project, 'Jumpstart Your Writing' may be for you."
Using ideas from the field of psychology as well as tips from successful
writers, students will begin thinking about issues such as setting goals,
managing time, finding support, and focusing on the process of writing
rather than the finished product.
Isleib, a clinical psychologist, took up writing mysteries set in the golf
world in order to justify time spent on the links. In addition to writing
about the sport she loves, Isleib seeks to depict realistic aspects of her
mental health profession to counter the wacky images often portrayed in the
popular media. Isleib¹s debut novel, SIX STROKES UNDER (Berkley Prime Crime,
2002) was nominated for an Agatha award for Best First Mystery and an
Anthony for Best Paperback Original. A BURIED LIE (2003), Anthony-nominated
PUTT TO DEATH (2004), and FAIRWAY TO HEAVEN (2005) have followed. Her
articles have also appeared in golf and mystery magazines. A new mystery
series featuring Guilford psychologist and advice columnist, Rebecca
Butterman, will debut in 2007.
The class is scheduled for 7-8:30 pm on September 28 at RJ Julia Booksellers
in Madison, CT, (245-3959). The fee is $20--advance registration required.
